The ELR Diesel Group is the organisation incorporating all the resident diesel locomotive and DMU owners, owning groups and other volunteers.

The first preserved locomotives to arrive at the ELR formed the Bury Hydraulic Group (BHG). These locos were Class 52 D1041 'WESTERN PRINCE', Class 42 Warship D832 'ONSLAUGHT', Hymek D7076 and Class 14 D9531.

The East Lancashire Railway has had a strong diesel presence since the beginning and by the time the ELR obtained its initial Light Railway Order and began running trains in 1987, two more ex-main line locomotives had joined the fleet. These were Class 40, D345/40145 and Class 24, D5054/24054.

The ELR Diesel Group includes the following organisations:

Birmingham Railcar Workgroup
Bury Diesel Multiple Unit Group
Bury Hydraulic Group
Bury Type 2 Group
Bury Valiant Group
CoBo Locomotive Group
Class 15 Preservation Society
Class 40 Preservation Society
Pioneer Diesel Locomotive Group

A number of other ex-main line locomotives are owned either by trusts or private individuals and the ELR itself.

The Fleet Information pages have more in-depth information on the diesel locomotives based at Bury.
